Two relationships are very important for working person’s HAPPINESS and GROWTH.
Happiness is relationship with ones house and other with boss. This is important for growth of individual in corporate hierarchy. It’s wrongly assumed that manager’s capability, performance and potential will take him to higher levels of management. As per studies, there are only 5 types of bosses
1.FRIENDLY BOSS- The major strength of such bosses is relationship. He likes to be very friendly with his subordinates. His concern for result is very low.But, His concern for feelings f subordinate is very high. Such bosses use many ways to smooth over conflicts. He is always optimistic and says “It is wonderful company!” We have many fine things, we have excellent retirement programme.The best way to manage such bosses is to organize as many social activities as possible. Weekly dinner, monthly family get together, picnics, outings and many such non work activities keep this boss delighted.
2.TASKMASTER BOSS – His concern for task and result is very high. But his concern for people is very low. Boss of this type is intolerant of conflict; he is precise and crystal clear about the instructions. If he asks “Do you have a question?” He doesn’t really expect an answer. Such bosses are highly sarcastic.
The best way to manage such boss is to always sat “Yes, Sir”.If he asks you t jump don’t ask “why”? Ask him “how high” and then keep on jumping to get a promotion or two.
3. GOOD FOR NOTHING BOSS-His concern for task and people is very low. His main concern is that he should not be sacked by the company.Therefore, he does the drama of putting in hard work.The best strategy to deal with such boss is not to trouble him to take decisions. He should be allowed to virtually RIP. He doesn’t mind his subordinates getting promotions and pay rises provided there is no danger to his chair.
4.TEAM MAKER BOSS- This type of boss is highly concerned for task and people. Such boss desires to contribute to corporate success by involving others so that they too may contribute. This boss helps subordinates to reach their highest potential. He does not says “I” .He says, “WE”.
The best way to manage such boss is to make sure you understand your boss and his context including goals and objectives, good way to begin is to remember that boss is human being.Understanding the boss is ofcourse, only half the story. The other half relates to understanding oneself.
5.MIDDLE OF ROAD MANAGER- His concern for task and people is medium. He holds in highest of esteem rules and regulations. His approach is to stay right in centre of things. The wheels of progress grind slowly, people move forward in small steps, not by turning things upside down.The best way to manage such boss is to master all rules and regulations. You should become master of manual. Target setting exercises with such boss should be done with care.
In the corporate sector there are many in the queue who are trying to improve their respective bosses. It is better to join the shorter queue of people who are trying to improve themselves. That will give real peace of mind and long term career growth.
